Volunteers convert old church into a community and cultural centre.
The ancient building in Walworth has been turned into 'Walworth's Living Room' as part of a wider project by Pembroke House, a local charity. Wickes and social enterprise, VIY ( volunteer It Yourself) made this transformation happen.

Dan Munn, Lead Mentor said: “It’s been fantastic to have had so many volunteers to come and help renovate this old church – and for so many to have gained valuable skills which they can continue to use in the future. We’re pleased that we’ve been able to help create a new hub for the local community to use.”
VIY helps young people aged 14-24 to learn trade and building skills by providing mentored vocational accreditations as well as acceess to further training, work placement and apprenticeships opportunities.
Mike Wilson, CEO of Pembroke House said: “Pembroke House is delighted to have worked with VIY to help young people gain real life skills while also improving the facilities here to create ‘Walworth’s Living Room’. We feel that this renovation is an important step in making Pembroke House a key location for all members of the local community.”
The make over included removing the old ceiling, restoring the pine flooring, building a new kitchen, refurbishing a disabled toilet and redecorating the entire interior.
Once is finished, the building will be a community hub for all kinds of local people to meet, eat and spend time.
